Puzzling pictures from unreadable text: an introduction to making text mode art

In the continuity of our other propositions (talk and performance), our contribution to AMRO26 is to introduce participants to the text mode practices, their specific characteristics as an artistic medium, and their meaning as a counter-culture scene toward mainstream computing.
The objective of this workshop is to present how to draw with letters and semigraphics using a keyboard. Presenting experimental FLOSS tools made by artists for making text-mode pictures while showing existing artworks of diverse styles.
Text mode arts brings together vernacular practices that turn users into artists through a playful relationship with machines' constraints. At the crossroad of generative art, design, and typography.
We will encourage participants to seek beauty in unexpected associations of shapes rather than seeking realism or imitation of familiar figures.
