Energy Academy

Energy Academy is a video installation tackling the myths surrounding (renewable) energy today. Drawing on the visual and narrative codes of popular science programs for kids, such as Bill Nye the Science Guy or C'est pas sorcier, the video questions the narrative behind the ecological transition.  As a starting point, the video debunks the viral myth of free energy production with perpetual motion machines, serving as a narrative device to address techno-solutionism in the energy sector. The subject of energy is playfully rendered tangible with the help of colourful, hand-made props and wacky sound effects. While making use of humour and satire allows to reveal the inconsistencies in the dominant discourse promoting the energy transition, such as the often misguided use of renewable energy, the fossil fuel and mineral extraction needed to produce the equipment necessary for electrification, and the global rise in energy demand, which makes it impossible to reduce our fossil fuel consumption.
