AMRO Showcase

The possible and impossible machine is a black box. This machine talks about the impossibility of interaction and about how we can think the possibilities of a collective interaction. With a simple method (by using arduino and processing) 3 persons have to activate the machine at the same time. If the participants achieve the perfect coordination, the machine will produce an indeterminate number of impossibles sentences. The text appears in a screen, mixed with images and sounds that are produced inside the box.

For Liwoli 2011 Enrique Tomás has composed a geolocalized soundwalk for the surroundings of the Kunst Uni Linz. "Narratives of Silence" talks about the
apparent quietness of the streets of Linz and about the emotion of
remembering the past and its sounds.

A two-tiered workshop, with both technical hands-on and idea-driven components. Learn to scrape data and reuse public and private information by writing custom code and using the Facebook API. Additionally, we’ll converse and conceptualize ideas to reclaim our data literally and also imagine what is possible with our data once it is ours!

Presentation of the collective focusing on collaboratives methodologies, research on critical practice with technologies, development of free-software art (protypes) and the role of the tester within the FLOSS community.

"Self-defenceIT" is a transnational interdisciplinary action research project by and for migrant women to promote action-oriented media education. Together with migrant women - as experts of their everyday life experience - possibilities are explored, tested and evaluated for actively supporting their children (8+), in order to reduce the "digital divide" between generations. With the help of competent media mentoring for children and young people with a migrant background, literacy empowerment strategies are developed in the fight against forms of violence like racism and sexism.

This lecture explores the artist-developer relationship in artist-led open source software projects, drawing on my own personal experience with UpStage. UpStage is an open source web-based platform for cyberformance (live online theatrical performance), initiated in 2003 by myself and three other artists because we were in need of a purpose-built platform for our work.

Naked on Pluto is a Multiplayer Text Adventure using Facebook, integrating a player's personal data and that of his “friends” as elements in a thrilling interactive fiction. The game playfully explores the nature of social networks from within, questioning the way these interfaces shape our friendships, the way social relations have become a commodity through targeted advertising based on the phenomenal quantities of information we supply these databases with, literally exposing ourselves.

Part artist lecture, part historical context, Owen Mundy will discuss his Give Me My Data project within the contexts of the history of state surveillance apparatuses, digital media and dialogical art practices, and the ongoing contradiction of privacy and utility in new media.

In recent years, social graph surfaced as the representation of how people are present on the web and how they are related to each other, on a global scale. It is generated by user activity on a wide range of social networking sites. Being offered the privacy control settings within the network, the users "perform their privacy" and voluntarily feed in the content designated solely for their peers. This creates not only "walled gardens" of closed systems, but more importantly, "privacy lock-in" for users who are left to demand protection of their personal data.

Heavily improvised, playing with the collapse of massed, barely functional salvaged equipment and software systems made manifest in sound/noise and image, Howse presents a complex, process-driven constructivist performance; the symphonic rise of the attempt to piece together fugal systematics is played out against the noise of collapse and machine crash at the deserted border of control.

RDEX (reaction-diffusion explorer) is a project related to the complex emergent behaviour of simple systems. Four numeric parameters control a simulated chemical reaction, in which the same equations can give rise to spots, stripes, spirals and near-chaotic oscillations.

GULCII (graphical untyped lambda calculus interpreter) is an experimental live-coding environment using a minimal abstract language from the foundations of computer science. The internal state of the virtual machine is presented, showing the process of computation.
