Invisible labour: Unveiling the Sub-Saharan Data Workers Powering AI

The rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has revolutionized industries worldwide, but the unsung heroes behind this progress remain largely invisible. This research project delves into the world of data workers in Sub-Saharan Africa, the hidden catalysts fuelling the AI revolution. Through a participatory research approach guided by Karl Marx's Workers' Inquiry method, we embark on a quest to illuminate the working conditions, job security, wages, and legal protections of these digital proletariats. By navigating the labyrinthine regulatory environment and industry practices shaping their experiences, we aim to unravel the complex tapestry of their realities. Amplifying the voices of the unheard, we place their narratives at the epicentre of our findings, striving to empower these invisible architects and catalyse a transformative shift towards equitable AI development. Our research aspires to build bridges of understanding, spark dialogue, and pave the way for a more inclusive AI ecosystem in Sub-Saharan Africa.
